Abstract
The percentages of saturation with the base cations Ca, Mg, K, Na, the T and V values of nonsprinkled and sprinkled (saltwater) variants of some plot and production experiments in the County of Rostock [East Germany] were used to investigate the influence of brackish water on the cation balance of soils. While the percentages of Na and Mg saturation increased after saltwater application, the mean percentage of K and Ca saturation remained almost constant. As a result the V value which is to be understood as the percentage of totally sorbed bases rose. The T value [cation exchange capacity] did not change.
