Abstract
An experimental design is described for a study of interactions between diseases and pests ("constraints") in the wheat agro-ecosystem. During 2 cropping seasons, associations of 3 constraints were most frequent; the composition of all associations was largely determined by the frequency each organism occurred. In 1980, Macrosiphum avenae occurred on 83% of all tagged culms and Septoria nodorum on 87%, and in 1981, M. avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum with 98 and 93%, respectively. Erysiphe graminis occurred every year at least on every 2nd culm, Oulema melanopus on about every third. Large variation was noted between the years with M. dirhodum (38 and 93%), S. nodorum (87 and 38%) Fusarium graminearum (29 and 0%) and BYDV [barley yellow dwarf virus] (2 and 6%). Apparently there are quantitative interactions between the organisms. In case E. graminis and M. dirhodum occur on the same leaves, the lesion development of S. nodorum is hampered. This and other interactions however, were statistically not significant. The reasons are discussed.
