Abstract:
A sudden epidemic of Puccinia striiformis struck the wheat crops of southern Spain in 1978. The epidemic was part of a wave of yellow rust epidemics in the western Mediterranean basin during 1977 and 1978. In both years, meteorological conditions were favorable to yellow rust in Italy, Tunisia and eastern Algeria more so in 1977, and in Spain and Portugal more so in 1978. Severe epidemics occurred in Italy, Tunisia and eastern Algeria in 1977 and in Spain in 1978. Weather systems in early 1978 were particularly favorable for transport of inoculum from northern Africa to Spain. Varieties grown in Spain in 1978 were particularly susceptible to various yellow rust races, and the weather was unusually conducive to an epidemic development of yellow rust. The races found in Spain in 1978 were not abnormal; they belonged to 2 regional groups, the French group and the Levantine group. Evidently invasion of Spain by rust came from various sources during 1977, local overseasoning on scattered, unnoticed sites, and local or regional build-up of the epidemic.
