Polarization effects in heavy-ion potentials are investigated in the coupled-channel framework. Particular emphasis is placed on a study of the effects of a truncation of the full Hubert space. The formalism, based on Feshbach's projection method, is applied to inelastic 16O + 16O scattering. The resulting effective diagonal and coupling potentials are discussed. It is shown that the present theory leads naturally to different potentials for different channels as well as to modified coupling strengths.
