Abstract:
According to currently available evidence the bulk of the organic matter contained in ancient sediments is of biological origin. There is no indication that the organic material was formed by non-biological processes. There is also no indication supporting the assumption that some kind of prebiotic evolution took place in the recorded history of the Archean Earth. The present findings strongly indicate that photosynthetic bacteria have been present and active from earliest times on. With these findings a reorientation of views about the origin of life becomes necessary.
