Abstract:
A simulation method of barley powdery mildew was developed using actual spore catches on trap plants as the input variable. Sporulation, spore dispersal and landing phases are not simulated; only infection, incubation and lesion growth. Daily minimum and maximum temperature and amount of rain are used as environmental driving variables. Observed weekly data of the host plant, divided in the different levels of insertion, are necessary for the model. The validation of the simulator with field data of 4 yr showed that disease progress curves can be simulated satisfactorily, especially in years with low disease intensities. The shortcomings and restrictions of the model are discussed.
