Abstract
The genetic constellation of inbred lines and F1-crosses in relation to sterility induction or restoration can be identified with the help of gametocides, i.e., to select restorer without test crossing by means of their reaction on GA3. The treatment with 0.5 mg GA3/plant induced male sterility between 80 and 100% in the different genotypes. This effect was more or less modified by weather, location and genotypic differences as well as interactions between these 3 factors. GA3 treatment caused a decrease in total fertility and only 10-30% up to a maximum of 80% hybrid seed could be produced relative to non-treated fertile plants depending on the environment and genotype. Although there was differential reaction of lines and F1-hybrids to GA3 treatment, the genetic constellation in relation to restoration or induction (0-line) of male sterility could not be identified.
