Abstract
On a low-protein diet the mean daily endogenous urinary N excretion was 1.153 g/day or 25 mg/day per kg body wt; the feces N loss was slightly higher with 1.226 g/day. The low-protein diet contained 12 g protein/day since the subjects found it difficult to consume a protein-free diet. This shows the difficulty with carrying out studies which require strict dietary control with educated adult subjects. Endogenous N excretion of Indian women under stricter dietary conditions remains to be determined. This should be carried out with a cooperative group of women by feeding sugar, sago and corn starch prepared to tasty dishes keeping the length of the experimental period as short as possible (5-6 days). The subjects should also be capable of consuming adequate quantities of the experimental diets, should not dislike bulk or be self-conscious about consuming large amounts of food.
