Abstract
In 2 yr of field experiments, isolated small plots with 4 spring barley cultivars proved to be appropriate for studies of changes in the frequencies of virulence spectra of E. graminis f. sp. hordei during the esodemic phase of the epidemic. Measurements can be made with jet sporetraps and with trap plants. During the esodemic phase, the frequency of cases of virulence matching resistance genes in winter barley was extremely high. The frequency of virulences for resistance genes in spring barley was roughly proportional to the acreages of the cultivars with corresponding resistance genes in the region. Natural selection of matching virulences during the esodemic phase differed in various cultivars and years. Selection was less pronounced when the frequency of matching virulence during the exodemic phase was high, but more marked at low frequencies. Cultivars of spring barley also differ from one another in the frequency of selection for the virulence of resistance genes in winter barley.
