Continuum multi-step direct-reaction theory is combined with a decomposition of the scattering amplitude into its near-and farside components. It is possible with these techniques to explain, in a quantum-mechanical framework, the increased importance of negative-angle scattering for large energy losses in deep inelastic collisions.
