Abstract
A method was developed which allows the size of algal cells to be measured faster than by the time consuming direct microscopic method. The algae are photographed. Then the negatives are projected as slides on the sensory plate of a digitizer. Length, width or diameter of the cells are transformed into digital information to be processed into cell volume by means of a special fortran program. A cell size distribution of the sample may be generated from the digitizer data. More than 1000 cells/h can be analyzed.
