Abstract
The single cell algae S. maxima and S. acutus, fat extracted or not, were used as the lone protein source in feed for fattening broilers. A growth retarding effect of the algae was compensated totally or partly by high vitamin A-dosage and methionine supplement. After fat extraction, the alga Spirulina was as effective in growth promotion as conventional feeding. Sensory carcass tests confirmed this result. The cause of growth retarding by unidentified factors of the algae is discussed regarding the parameters protein value and utilization of vitamin A or carotene in the liver storage test. Growth retarding factors are most likely in the crude fat of the algae.
