Abstract
Artificially produced mixtures of heart and liver mitochondria (MG, n = 153) of slaughtered animals of German Landrace (DL), German Edelschwein (Yorkshire; DE), F1-DL .times. DE and R1-DL .times. F1 had either higher (K+) or lower (K-) activities of O2-consumption, oxydative phosphorylation (P/O), activities of cytochrome-c-oxydase (CO), and NADH-cytochrome-c-reductase (NCR) compared with the theoretically expected means of isolated mitochondria of each breed. This phenomenon (mitochondrial complementation; K), other authors may be regarded as certain. Numeric relationship of K+:K-, relative amounts and differences between positive and negative complements were depending on type of mitochondria (heart and liver), chemical-physiological indicator (KI:O2, P/O, CO, NCR), and age of complementation partners (pork breeding animals). When parameters of reproductive performance (number of piglets at birth, 28th and 70th day of life/litter, n = 289 litters) were ranged for mitochondrial complementation of either full sib or reproductive animals themselves, a significantly better reproductive performance was found in most KI''s for the K+- compared with the K--group. A positive relationship between the direction of mitochondrial complementation and the combining ability for reproduction in pigs is indicated. Besides O2 consumption P/O quotient and cytochrome-c-oxydase seem to be of good identification-value for combining ability; NADH-cytochrome-c-reductase does not have this property. Mitochondrial complementation is discussed in relation with the chemical-physiological explanation for heterosis and its practical use for the early diagnoses of combining ability.
