Abstract:
A nitrogen balance study was carried out to determine the effect of meals containing different amounts of protein compared with meals containing equal amounts of protein. The cross-over study with 8 adult women lasted for 24 days. When the protein intake is distributed evenly over several meals of the day, a better nitrogen balance is achieved. This indicates the need to distribute the often little available protein over all meals to bring about a reasonable balance. A diet supplying the minimum requirement of protein, which also meets the requirements for vitamins and minerals, is better utilized by young women when balancing the protein in each meal of the day.
