Abstract
Differences in varietal resistance were expressed more obviously by the number of powdery mildew colonies per plant or per leaf than by the size of colonies. This was of main interest for estimating resistance in the field. In laboratory experiments, the more susceptible varieties exhibited a higher proportion of large colonies besides an increased total number of successful infections. In general, counting and measuring of colonies could serve as relative simple and useful criteria to assess the resistance of varieties. Problems and restrictions of this method are discussed.
