Abstract:
Inoculations in the greenhouse with the polyphagous fungus W. sclerotiorum showed that Whetzelinia isolates from sunflower, soybean and lettuce infest rape strongly; with these inocula only minor differences were found among the cultivars tested. Investigations in the phytotron showed the most distinct differences among the cultivars under long-day conditions and at low temperatures. ''Laura'' was the most susceptible cultivar. ''Girita'' was susceptible under short-day conditions but was resistant under long-day conditions at high and low temperatures. In field infection trials in which sclerotia were applied as an additional source of infection, apothecia were formed; however, the plants were infested by the vegetative mycelium mainly through direct contact with the sclerotia. Because of unfavorable conditions for ascospores, the incidence of Whetzelinia infestation was low. Some methods of inoculation were tested. Best results were obtained with oat kernels and agar pieces under long-day conditions and at low temperatures. These methods may permit possible testing of the tolerance of young plants against W. sclerotiorum.
