Abstract
Examination of leaves from various cultivars of black, red and white currant, as well as gooseberry revealed significant differences in regard to their susceptibility to American gooseberry mildew (S. mors-uvae) under field conditions. The youngest leaves of all susceptible cultivars showed fungus development. With increasing leaf development there was increasing resistance to S. mors-uvae. A disease gradient from top to bottom leaves was observed. On 1 yr old shoots the number of leaves with macroscopically visible mildew development varied between 0 and 14.8. This reproducible susceptibility gradient can serve for characterization of Ribes cultivars in regard to their overall resistance to S. mors-uvae. The grade of shoot infection usually corresponded to that of leaf infection; however, there were cases with heavy leaf infection but practically no shoot infection. Cleistothecia usually were observed on shoot tips down to 12 cm of the terminal buds.
