A classical many-body model for heavy-ion collisions at high energy has been proposed earlier, and numerical calculations have been reported. An extension to include elementary inelastic pion processes is investigated here. Nucleons are treated as relativistic Dirac particles coupled to the isovector pion field through pseudoscalar γ5 coupling. Following a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, the Heisenberg equations of motion are derived for the expectation values of the relevant operators. The expectation values are taken with respect to a factorized wave function. The factorization ansatz plus the narrow wave packet assumption leads to classical-like equations of motion for the nucléons and the meson field amplitudes. The Δ(3, 3) resonance is qualitatively reproduced. Parameters of the model include the momentum cut-off (i.e. form factor) and the coupling constant. These are adjusted to reproduce isospin-averaged π-nucleon cross sections.
