Abstract
Anatomy of the skull in H. formosa was investigated with X-ray projection microscopy and with a modified Spalteholz-method, as described herein. X-ray projection microscopy was employed for the 1st time for examination of fish skulls. This method quickly produces useful results of skull morphology. Teeth were also illustrated very well. The modified Spalteholz-method has a higher value of declaration than X-ray projection microscopy, because this method can demonstrate single bones. Both methods should be used for studying fish skulls. X-ray projection microscopy enables stereomicrographs to be made. Artefacts are rare by using critical-point-drying or freeze-drying in X-ray projection microscopy.
