Abstract
Two sunflower hybrids showed the highest infection when young plants at the 4-6 leaf stage were tested in a climatized greenhouse with varied day length and temperature corresponding to the combination long day and cool temperature. In the infection method used the mycelium suspension was injected through a wad of cotton wool put around the hypocotyl. This injection method, which had been effective in the climatized greenhouse, was unsuitable for the field test because soil temperature was too high at the time of injection. The injection of mycelium suspension in the parenchyma of the heads, which caused an infestation of nearly 100%, gave insufficient information on differences among varieties. The renewed test of all varieties and lines of the field tests in the climatized greenhouse under long day and cool temperature by the method developed in the preceding winter (mycelial suspension in a wad of cotton wool applied around the hypocotyl) showed that there were clear differences in infestation levels; line PK 104/75 was resistant. The transferability of the results of the greenhouse test to the conditions in the field under natural infection pressure was investigated with selected varieties and lines showing different levels of infestation; the agreement with the greenhouse test was sufficient. The most resistant line was again PK 104/75. The differences found among varieties and lines showed that a selection for horizontal resistance appears promising with the methods used.
