Abstract:
Observations were conducted for 28 yr on 3 initial strains and the standard variety Hesa. Variability (s%) amounted to 27.3% on an average seed yield of 30.8 dt[deciton]/ha. For plant height and head diameter, the variation coefficient over the years was smaller, with s% = 20.8 and 18.7, respectively. The proportion of kernel and the fat content of kernel showed much smaller environmental fluctuations, with s% = 5.7 and 5.8, respectively. By contrast, with an average size of the center space of the sunflower head which contains no seeds amounting to 3.3 cm, variability was essentially higher over the years, at s% = 35.5. Investigations on continued selfing from I0 to I25 revealed the following performance deficiencies due to inbreeding, measured against the performance of the standard variety, or against the mean of the 3 initial strains: seed yield average of all I-lines, 61% = 18.5 dt/ha with inbreeding minimum in I8, 70% = 21.2 dt/ha; average plant height from I0 to I25, 20% = 30 cm with minimum in I10 of 27% = 40 cm; average head diameter, 21% = 4.6 cm with a minimum in I18, 35% = 7.6 cm; 1000 seed weight average 22% = 18.4 g with inbreeding minimum in I8 of 26% = 21.7 g and in I22, 37% = 30.9; average crude fat content in kernel 7% = 3.7% oil, with minimum in I8 of 10% = 5.2% oil and in I20 of 15% = 7.9% oil.
