Abstract
Tissue from symptom bearing young leaves of G. aurantiaca plants systemically infected with citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) was investigated by EM. In contrast to a previous report (Semancik and Vanderwoude 1976) the appearance of the so-called paramural bodies or plasmalemmasomes cannot be considered to be the primary cytopathic effect of CEV-infections in Gynura because these structures are present at the same frequency in healthy control plants also. The actual viroid-specific cytopathic changes are alterations of the plasmalemmasomes themselves, which exhibit irregularities in their shape and their internal membrane system. In addition, the cell walls appear extremely distorted with irregular profiles which is a submicroscopic equivalent to the macroscopic symptom of leaf malformation.
