INTERACTIONS OF IRON, MANGANESE, AND ZINC DURING UPTAKE AND TRANSPORT BY MAIZE AND SUNFLOWER

Abstract
In water culture experiments with maize and sunflower the influence of increasing Mn and Fe concentrations in the nutrient solution on amount and concentration of Fe, Mn and Zn in aerial parts and roots was studied. In aerial parts of maize the Fe and Zn concentration was lowered by increased Mn concentrations of the nutrient solution, but the Fe and Zn concentration of the roots was increased under the same condition. Increasing the Fe concentration in the nutrient medium led to reduced Zn concentration and total Zn amount in both upper parts and roots of maize, which confirms earlier results of an Fe:Zn interaction already during uptake. The total uptake of Mn was not reduced in this case. Fe and Zn concentrations of sunflower plants were reduced by increasing the Mn concentration in the culture solution, although the total amount of both elements, taken up by the plants, increased. Increasing Fe concentrations in the culture solution resulted in a higher uptake and concentration of Fe, but uptake of Mn and Zn were reduced. According to these results, only sunflower showed an antagonistic effect of Fe on Mn as far as total uptake and concentration of the element in the plant is concerned. In all other cases Fe and Mn did not interfere in the uptake of each other by the plants.
