Abstract:
Acer pseudoplatanus, Tilia cordata and Pinus sylvestris were contaminated with 159 g NaCl/m2 soil during winter. In May and June apparent photosynthesis of the test plants was determined. The test showed large differences with regard to the inhibition of photosynthesis of the trees: among the deciduous trees inhibition of net photosynthesis of A. pseudoplatanus was greater than that of T. cordata. The low reduction of photosynthesis of P. sylvestris, compared to that of the deciduous trees, is explained by the low incorporation of chloride in the needles which developed after salt contamination. All the older needles of previous years had died off at that time. An additional fumigation of the salt-treated trees with SO2 led to synergistic effects on photosynthesis of A. pseudoplatanus and P. sylvestris.
