Abstract
The frequency of postoperative deep vein thrombosis after knee surgery and the influence of tourniquet ischemia were examined in a study of about 80 patients. Thrombosis was verified at the 6th post-operative day with phlebography. About 40% of thromboses were found in the deep leg veins but only in the lower leg. The frequency of thrombosis after tourniquet was the same as thrombosis frequency without tourniquet. The kind of anesthesia (inhalation or regional) made no difference. Renunciation of tourniquet ischemia, an essential technical simplification, apparently is not justified in uncomplicated knee surgery.
