Abstract
Features of the gastric anatomy were investigated in 5 spp. of the marsupial family Macropodidae, (Potorous tridactylus, Petrogale penicillata, Thylogale thetis, Macropus eugenii and M. giganteus). The opening of the esophagus into the stomach is at the distal tubiform forestomach in P. tridactylus, in the proximal region of this forestomach part in P. penicillata and M. eugenii and near the border between forestomach sac and tube in T. thetis and M. giganteus. The loop of oblique fibers of the tunica muscularis surrounding the cardia cannot be found in P. penicillata, but is present in the other species. The gastric sulcus (sulcus ventriculi) is not differentiated in T. thetis and P. penicillata, but in M. giganteus it is present, but not prominent. The epithelial lining is differentiated into 3 types within the 2 regions of the forestomach: Cardiac mucosa only can be found in forestomach sac and tube in P. tridactylus; in T. thetis and P. penicillata the tubiform forestomach is lined with glandular and nonglandular mucosa and the sacciform forestomach with nonglandular squamous mucosa only; in M. eugenii and M. giganteus both regions of the forestomach are lined with glandular as well as nonglandular mucosa. The relative volumes of both forestomach regions vary considerably. The sacciform forestomach is extremely voluminous in P. tridactylus and in P. penicillata, M. eugenii and M. giganteus relatively small while the forestomach tube becomes relatively voluminous in the latter 3 spp. T. thetis lies between both extremes, the relative volumes of both forestomach regions are relatively similar. A model was constructed that agrees closely to information obtained from the diagrams and from the paleontological findings. Nomenclatural problems and functional implications of these anatomical differentiations in the Macropodidae are discussed.
