Abstract
Root distribution of maize and wheat was studied in relation to the most important soil properties of loess soils from the region of Giessen and subjected to different degrees of erosion (eroded Parabraunerde, Pararendzina, Kolluvisol). Two autoradiographic methods and root washing were used for investigating root distribution. Root growth was considerably reduced in the C-horizon of a Pararendzina and several eroded Parabraunerde soils. This was largely explained by lower K-availability, induced by the high lime content and the content of K-fixing clay minerals in the primary loess. In the eroded Parabraunerde soils the higher pH probably intensified the unfavorable influence of the primary loess. Aeration, mechanical impedance and water capacity probably did not considerably affect root growth and productivities.
