Abstract
For the production of hybrid seed in hermaphrodite plants it is necessary to use either cytoplasmic genetic male-sterility or gametocides which achieve complete chemical emasculation without seriously reducing fertility. A review is given on the development of male-sterility in maize and sunflowers. The application of gametocides was tried in a great variety of plant species. The search for useful gametocides should be continued, since cytoplasmic male-sterility can be dangerous due to the possible linkage between male-sterility and susceptibility to diseases as observed in maize 1963-1970.
