Abstract
Twelve representative arable soils of Hesse have been investigated on their content of fixed ammonium N. The contents obtained were in a range of 25-271 ppm NH4-N in air dry soil. Calculated on soil volume these contents of fixed NH4+ amount to 524-3346 by NH4-N/ha for a soil depth of 90 cm. Alluvial soils were rich, soils of basaltic origin low in fixed NH4+. Apparently in the soils of basaltic origin the specific sites of clay minerals are mainly occupied by K+ and only to a less degree by NH4+. This assumption is supported by the negative correlation (r = 0.59xxx) between the fixed NH4+ was correlated with the clay content (r = 0.45xxx); but no significant correlation between fixed NH4+ and unspecifically adsorbed NH4+ or soluble nitrate was found. Apparently the higher quantities of fixed NH4+ in the alluvial soils and in several loss soils are of some importance for the nutrition of crops.
