Abstract:
The characteristics of 4 types of herbivore stomachs, namely peccary-type, ruminant-type, hippopotamus-type and macropod-type, and their strategy of digestive movement is studied. The macropod-type is especially adapted to changing functional conditions, being adjustable to changing climatic and vegetational conditions as found in Australia. The development of such conditions in Australia from the Paleocene to the present day is discussed. Grasslands developed and can be correlated with adaptations of the digestive tract to food-material that is difficult to digest.
