Abstract
The oocytes of the freshwater teleosts N. barbatulus and G. gobio were investigated by light microscopy and EM. The primary oocyte membrane forms microvilli. Outside the primary oocyte membrane an osmiophilic substance is deposited between the microvilli beginning the formation of the cortical layers. The osmiophilic substance forms plugs between the microvilli. In both species the cortex consists of 2 layers, the cortex radiatus internus and the cortex radiatus externus. The cortex radiatus externus is formed prior to the cortex radiatus internus. Radial canals with microvilli pass through both cortical layers. The terminology of the egg membranes of freshwater teleosts is approximated to that of marine teleosts. In Gobia cortical alveoli are formed at the end of stage 1 and in Noemacheilus they are formed at the beginning of stage II originating from dictyosomes. The greatest part of the lipid yolk is formed in the free cytoplasm and a smaller part is synthesized in dictyosomes. Protein yolk is formed by Noemacheilus by transformation of mitochondria and out of multivesicular bodies. In Gobio the protein yolk is formed by transformation of mitochondria and in annulate lamellae. In Gobio, a part of protein yolk is not surrounded by a visible membrane. This part of yolk has a crystalline structure and is formed only in stage III.
