PESTS OF CAPE VERDE ISLANDS

Abstract
On the Cape Verde Islands, which were repeatedly hit be severe drought during the last decades, mites and insects play an important role as crop pests. During the last few years 4 mite spp., 5 grasshopper spp., 2 thrip spp., 4 bugs spp., 34 spp. of homopterous insects, 2 weevil spp., 17 moth and butterfly spp. and 2 fruit fly spp. were collected on crops grown on the islands. Some of these mite and insect species are major pests, e.g., Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acarina), Oedalus senegalensis (Orthoptera), Nezara viridula (Heteroptera), Coccus viridis (Homoptera), Cylas puncticollis (Coleoptera), Etiella zinckenella, Sesamia nonagrioides, Agrotis segetum (Lepidoptera) and Dacus ciliatus (Diptera).
