Abstract
The influence of NaCl on growth and inorganic ion contents of differentially salt-tolerant plants (Vicia faba, Atriplex nitens, A. calotheca and A. halimus) was investigated. It was clearly demonstrated by growth rate, NaCl uptake and osmotic pressure of the plants grown on a non-saline soil that salt tolerance is greatest in A. halimus and diminished in the seris A. calotheca, A. nitens and V. faba. All species adapted their osmotic pressure to soil salinity by uptake of Na+ and especially Cl- ions. While the Atriplex sp. take up NaCl only at low salt levels and limit salt absorption at high salt levels, the NaCl uptake of V. faba is proportional to all soil salinity levels. The K uptake of these plants is inhibited differentially by increasing NaCl concentrations. The Ca2+, Mg2+-, SO42-- and N content is not or only slightly decreased by NaCl.
