Abstract
In a crossbreeding experiments with 2392 pigs, including a purebred German Landrace (DL) group and 8 combinations between DL, Belgian Landrace (BL) and German Large White (DE) boars (6-7 boars per breed) and DL, BL .times. DL and DE .times. DL sows (48-55 sows per breed) vitality and carcass quality were investigated. The crossbreds on the basis of BL and DL mainly showed a decrease of vitality compared with purebred DL. In these cases the commercial crosses, although probably having a higher grade of heterozygosity did not show a stimulation of vitality, but in the cases of F1 DE .times. DL and both backcrosses the vitality increased compared with purebred DL. F1 excelles both backcrosses. The relations between vitality and eye muscle area were negative, and positive between lean/fat-ratio and vitality. The possibility of combining high vitality with low amount of fat was discussed. Carcass quality including meat quality and the effects of heterosis were examined. The improvement of meat quality in some crossbred groups was combined with an increase of lean/fat-ratio.
