Abstract:
The larvae of some bush-crickets (Tettigoniidae) were reared under different constant temperatures from 15.degree.-40.degree. C. Three types of development were considered as adaptations to the microclimatic conditions of their habitats. Cool-stenothermal species develop already at 15.degree. C, and cannot be reared above 30.degree. C (e.g. Meconema thalassinum (De Geer 1773). Warm-stenothermal species can only be reared above 20.degree. C with an optimum at 33.degree. C (e.g. Decticus verrucivorus (L. 1758). Eurythermal species can be reared from 15.degree.-37.degree. C (e.g. Phaneroptera falcata (Poda 1761). Some species are intermediate. Small differences in postembryonic development of the Tettigonia spp. exist, e.g., T. cantans (Fuessly 1775) has only 6 larval instars while there are 7 in T. viridissima L. 1758. Conocephalus discolor Thunberg 1815 and C. dorsalis (Latreille 1804) show high mortality when reared at high relative humidity [RH] (90%) whereas 40% RH was favorable for development of C. dorsalis. Periods at which different larval instars of the tettigoniids can be found in the field are summarized graphically for species occurring in the Vogelsberg mountain [West Germany].
