Abstract: 
The eye of S. putris is a closed vesicle type with lens and vitreous body, situated at the tip of each of the 2 contractible posterior tentacles. The diameter of an eye of an adult S. putris measures 165 .mu.m. The eye is ellipsoid shaped. The retina and the cornea are single layered. The retina consists of sensory and pigment cells which differ in size. The pigment cells are smaller than the sensory cells and under the light microscope show no microvilli, which are well dveloped in the sensory cells. The sensory cells are bottle-shaped, their nuclei about twice as large as those of the pigment cells and packed with chromatin. The lens is round to elliptical and is situated acentrically in the vitreous body closer to the cornea. The pigmented optic nerve enters the base of the retina from the side. It is surrounded by muscle tissue and lies adjacent to the tentacle nerve. The eye of freshly hatched Succinea corresponds to the eye of the adult but is smaller. The eye develops allometrically. The eye of S. putris resembles many eye types of the Prosobranchia and the Opisthobranchia externally, but has a differing position and light microscopical structure. The essential anatomical, histological and topographical characteristics correspond to those of the Stylommatophora.
