Abstract
The follicles of the fresh-water teleost fishes N. barbatulus and G. gobio were investigated by EM. They consisted of follicle epithelium, basement membrane and theca folliculi. In early stage I, intense formation of vesicles took place below the primary oocyte membrane. At the same time the primary oocyte membrane partially dissolved. In this way an intimate contact was established between oocyte cytoplasm and follicle epithelium in Noemacheilus. The cells of the follicle epithelium of Noemacheilus were toothed and contained few desmosomes. In Gobio the boundaries of the follicle epithelium were straight. More desmosomes existed in Gobio than in Noemacheilus. From the follicle epithelium shorter and longer processes projected into the radial canals of the cortex radiatus. There was no direct contact between these processes and the microvilli of the oocyte. In stage III the plugs of the cortex radiatus externus attached to the follicle epithelium. The oocyte was anchored to the follicle by the processes of the follicle epithelium. Two other functions of the processes and the microvilli of the oocyte were specified.
