Abstract:
The 3 most useful methods of determining the age of the red fox (tooth wear, dry weight of crystalline lens, and height of cementum layers) were tested on a group of 25 animals. For all age classes, there was close correspondence between the 1st and 3rd methods; they appear entirely satisfactory for investigations of population dynamics to estimate age on the basis of dental wear. In cases of doubt and for scientific experiments, the cementum ring method, though somewhat more costly as regards time and materials, is favored: horizontal cross-sections of the root tips of the middle premolars (P2 and P3) give extremely good results.
