Abstract
In a field station in Ruiru, Kenya, in 1973-74, hourly uredospore catches of H. vastatrix Berk. et Br. between and above coffee canopies were recorded in Burkard volumetric spore traps. A diurnal cycle of uredospore liberation was observed, correlated with maximum wind speed, high temperature and low humidity. The main peak in spore release usually coincided with the daily peak in wind speed or occurred up to 6 h later, in the afternoon. Irregular rainfall at different hours of the day had little or no influence on periodicity. During seasons with low disease incidence a slight or no diurnal cycle of spore liberation was observed.
