Abstract
Polythene sheets, 550 cm2 in area, were set up, running in 3 directions (from SW, W and NW) over a distance of up to 50 m, and used to collect the pollen and pollen sacs of D. glomerata. The number of pollen sacs collected 50 m from the pollen source was only 0.8% of those found 1 m from the source. The decrease in the amount of pollen found was not nearly so marked and took place as an exponential function with a negative power, of the distance from the source. The amount of pollen found 50 m from the source was 14.8% of that found 1 m from the source and the amounts of pollen that would be found even further away can be calculated by extrapolation. The use of identical methods and experimental design is necessary in order to make better comparisons between studies having similar objectives.
