Abstract
After fumigation with 0.1 ppm SO2 for 14 days the older leaves of P. sativum showed visible symptoms of slight chlorosis whereas comparably old leaves of Z. mays did not exhibit any macroscopic symptoms. At the ultrastructural level the chlorotic parts of the Pisum leaves showed significant swellings of mainly the stroma thylakoids within the chloroplasts whereas under this SO2 concentration no disintegration of the chloroplast structure was observed. No other cytoplasmic alterations were visible. There was no effect of SO2 fumigation on the ultrastructure of both Z. mays mesophyll and bundle sheath cells.
