Abstract
To produce dwarfing cherry rootstocks interspecific hybridizations were done within the 2 Prunus sections, Eucerasus and Pseudocerasus. Of 145 cross combinations in 73 trees, 88% gave fruits. In addition to the cross pollinations and selfs in the tree the pollen tube growth was investigated in the style and the ovary. In 85% of the crosses in vivo and in vitro results were comparable. In 10% incompatibility could be excluded as the cause of failing fruit set. Unilateral incompatibility was observed in 6 cross combinations. Bilateral incompatibility was not present. With the exception of tetraploid P. cerasus all parent species were self incompatible, although some of them set a low percentage of fruits in some years under favorable conditions.
