Abstract:
Based on good field results, certain juvenoids (insect growth regulators) such as methoprene can be successfully applied against disease-transmitting mosquitoes (USA). Less progress could be obtained with ecdysonoids for several reasons. The limonoid azadirachtin seems to be one of the most promising substances of plant origin because of its various effects on insect pests. Diflubenzuron is a growth inhibitor that is already in use against caterpillars on forest trees and pests of hygienic importance (flies, etc.). This compound can disturb the synthesis of chitin and also oogenesis and embryonic development. The anti-juvenile hormones precocene 1 and precocene 2 are also of special interest. Some new derivates of cyclopropylmethyl alcohol and cyclopropanecarboxylic acid are effective ovicides in spider mites and also show certain growth-inhibiting effects.
