Abstract:
The reproductive system of Apion virens Herbst is described. In A. virens ovariole length increases continuously after emergence until egg-deposition takes place. In A. apricans Herbst, A. assimile Kirby and A. flavipes Payk., development starts only after the spring migration from the hibernation sites is finished. Development of the male reproductive system is similar. Parasitism by the braconid Microctonus (?) brevipetiolatus Thomson inhibits the development of the A. virens female reproductive system. High temperatures (30.degree. C) during hibernation result in a continuation of ovariole development to full length within a few hours. The indirect flight muscles fully developed during the whole life-time in those species with 2 flight periods in autumn and spring. In species with 1 dispersal phase in autumn only, the mucles are reduced after this phase. Micropterous specimen of species with wing dimorphism mostly have reduced flight muscles. The flight muscles are not affected by endoparasitism.
