Abstract
Chlorogenic acids, a coumaric acid-coumarin-complex, tryptamine and tryptophan were isolated from young shoot tips of Prunus (P. avium, P. cerasus, P. fruticosa, and hybrids involving these species) trees varying in vigor. There is some parallelity between the contents of these substances and the growth of the most and least vigorous trees, but the differences between medium sized trees were quite small in magnitude. L-tryptophan and tryptamine strongly enhance the growth of P. avium shoot segments from the subterminal elongation zone when added together with chlorogenic acid to the nutrient solution. The relation between the amounts of substances detected and the vigor of the Prunus trees indicates the value of these metabolites as preselection indices.
