By varying the field strengths in the electrostatic and in the magnetic sector field of a double focusing mass spectrometer and by varying further the potential of the midpotential surface of the electrostatic condenser it is shown that angle and energy focusing can be forced to occur at the exit slit even for an imperfectly built system. For this purpose particle trajectories are described relative to an optical axis which is straight in all field free regions but which deviates from the usual circle in radially inhomogeneous sector fields.
