Abstract: 

This paper examines how to explain the differences which persist between Eastern and Western Germany 30 years after the German unification. The thesis is that the persistence of those differences is caused by a West German dominance culture, resulting from a continuing difference in prosperity between East and West, different opportunities of advancement into the country’s elites, and of West German dominance of the public discourse. Its consequences include specific psychological mechanisms among East Germans, which in turn contribute to the further reinforcement of West German dominance. General implications for the dynamics of unification processes are drawn from the example of German unification.
