Dielectronic recombination is the most important among several possible mechanisms by which a free electron can recombine with an ion. It is characterized by resonances associated with intermediate highly excited Rydberg states. These are potentially subject to influences of the environment acting via fields, irradiation or collisions. As an example, this chapter describes the effects of external electric and magnetic fields on the cross sections for dielectronic recombination.
