Abstract: 

The two center shell model has been used to calculate ion-ion potentials for ¹²C+¹²C, ¹⁶O+¹⁶O, and ¹⁸O+¹⁸O. Because of the ion shell structure the ¹⁶O+¹⁶O potential is significantly shallow, in agreement with optical model potentials derived from scattering experiments. A mechanism is proposed to calculate the transition between adiabatic and nonadiabatic potentials as a function of the ion energies.
