Abstract

One major driving force for the study of photoelectrochemically active electrode materials is the search for commercially viable solar cells. Their principles of operation have been explored mainly between 1960 and 1980 and a number of strategies were developed that worked quite efficiently for single-crystalline inorganic semiconductors. Subsequent research also tried to explore new systems of acceptable efficiency and stability at a more affordable price. The use of amorphous inorganic semiconductors or materials grown as thin films was one strategy, the use of organic semiconductors another.
